I am pleased to announce that COVE is expanding to a new, parallel group that will be called "Men C.A.N. (Community Action Now)". We believe that a vital part of raising awareness and preventing violence against women is to have a group of men who are supporters of the cause and would like to build skills and gain knowledge that will allow them to make strides in the effort to end this violence.

Men C.A.N. is conceptualized as a group that would hold weekly meetings at the Book Mark on Thursdays at 8:00 a.m. (with additional options being held in the evening) --in these meetings we will discuss issues, take part in collective education in opposing gender violence, and discussing how to build our presence at events. This presence will be established by things that range from the simple, such as distributing t-shirts and hats, to the more involved, such as holding events. Our first planned event is to hold a table at Friday Night Live.

We have a community focus, believing that a team of men who have pledged to end this gender violence and are willing to support that pledge within the community will be an engaging force. We believe in using a "bystander" approach to engage other men in choosing respect above violence. We will be taking an effort to challenge negative cultural attitudes regarding women, including popular thought that frames gender relations as "men vs. women" as opposed to harmonious co-operation for a better community.

I hope that you take an interest and join this group. The amount of involvement can be directly related to the time you can give. If you only can come to a meeting or two a month, that's fine, but if you can come to all meetings as well as all events and lead outreach initiatives, that's also great. We simply want to bring our male supporters together to help strengthen the local community.

Our first meeting will be held on Thursday, June 13, 2013 @ 8:00 a.m. at the Bookmark in Ludington.  Please feel free to attend just to see what our plans are for this group.  There will be no obligation to join.

Thank you and looking forward to seeing you at our first meeting!

With respect,

Donald A Lyons III                                           Jamie Catlett, COVE Volunteer Coordinator

Men CAN (Community Action Now) was the brainchild of Jamie Catlett. "She gathered different people in the community to help her get it started,” said steering committee member Brad Reed. "She comes to every meeting and it is her vision we are following.”

The group aims to bring everyone together to build communities that are free from violence against women, children, and men.

Catlett said she first sought the help of Donald Lyon in starting the group.

"Donald Lyon was hugely instrumental in getting this launched,” she said. "Everyone on the steering committee contributes. It’s a collaboration of really great men in the community getting together to do this.”

"It was just an idea I had,” Catlett said. "Everyone was willing to contribute to it.”

Steering committee members are Noel Niemann, chair; Jamie Catlett, co-chair; Brad Reed, Adam Johnson, Ben Spore, Bradley Moody, Robert Waite, Wally Cain, Chris Ward, A.J. Storck, Steve Bieniek and Jim Scatena.

Reed said Men CAN is a vital part of the community.
